Washington Medals
1797 Washington 'Sansom' Medal in Bronzed Copper, Baker 72A, Superb Uncirculated.
Plain edge. Julian PR-1, struck at the United States Mint. Designed by John Reich, published by Joseph Sansom of Philadelphia. Very similar to Baker 71 except that the Q in RELINQ on the reverse is farther from the exergue line. The later Baker 73 is larger than 71 and 72 and easily discerned from the latter two because its edge border is much narrower. This issue is popular because of the strong, handsome portrait of Washington. Impeccable quality and choice, problem-free surfaces. According to Rulau/Fuld, this variety was struck sometime between 1859 and the 1870Õs, and only 308 were made.
