We can draw no other conclusion than that this three-color lithographic print was brought into existence for no other purpose than a decorative one seeing as no reference could be found with text. Not that we’re complaining. The blend of classically stoic athleticism and coy Belle Epoque voyeurism lends an intriguing tension to an otherwise civilized and decorous design. This Belgian painter and illustrator, set designer and teacher did very few posters, but they are quite expressive even if a bit formal in design. “Emotions are controlled and sustained by vigorous yet subtle drawing, by composition which focuses on the critically expressive moment . . . and by a sober and delicate color scheme which is adapted to the mood” (Belle Epoque 1970, p. 44).
