“In 1936, Derouet . . . announced the first lottery drawing of the year with a design of a little gentleman with his arms raised who looked like Edgar’s little brother–hair parted on the side, dark suit and carefully knotted tie. This work was welcomed enthusiastically . . . in Vendre: ‘This time, no more trite old-fashioned ideas or vaguely national allegories, but simply a happy winner, created with an irresistible touch, in which the simplicity of the subject is matched by the execution” (Derouet, p. 43). Three years later, Derouet, now partnered with Lesacq, sends his neatly-coifed winner off for the weekend, backpack packed and train-ready, for this rail traveler’s installment of the lottery. And this time, it’s the conductor that’s jumping for joy as the lucky winner wends away.
