Lot 356 - 1898 Barber Dime NGC PF67
1898 Barber Dime. Only 735 Proofs made. A satiny frosted gem typical of 1898 with strong underlying mirrors and faint delicate highlights. Boldly struck with just remarkable detail in the hair and throughout the wreath. Nicely toned, as well.

The handsome Longacre "cereal wreath" comprising cotton, tobacco, sugar cane, corn, wheat and oak leaves. This is the second design of a cereal wreath created by the Mint's chief engraver, 1844-69. Longacre's first "cereal wreath" which is used on the flying eagle cents, the gold dollars (type 2 and 3) as well as the $3 gold pieces, is comprised of corn, wheat, cotton and tobacco but without the sugar cane or oak leaves. In modified form from the seated dimes and half dimes, it appears on the Barber dimes of 1892-1916 showing more delicate and crisper detail.
