Published between 1804 and 1807, this important early work on the life and accomplishments of Washington was written by John Marshall, Chief Justice of the United States Supreme Court. Howes M317. Volume I contains 488 pages, plus 45 pages of 'Notes,' but lacks the frontispiece portrait of Washington. Volume II is 560 pages, with 72 pages of Notes. Volume III is 580 pages, plus 28 pages of Notes. Volume IV is 626 pages and 16 pages of Notes. Volume V is large and has 779 pages, with 36 pages of Notes. The books are each 8.5' x 5.25,' hardbound, dyed plum calf, gilt-stamped spines.
The Atlas is 8.75' x 5.75,' original boards, with printed paper cover label; cover is partially separated, but the 10 folding maps are wonderful--hand-colored in outline. The maps are approximately 10' x 15.' Included are: 'A Plan of New York Island...shewing the Position of the American and British Armies, before, at, and after the Engagement on the Heights, August 27th, 1776'; 'A Plan of the Northern Part of New Jersey, shewing the Positions of the American and British Armies after crossing the North River in 1776'; 'A Map of the Country which was the scene of operations of the Northern Army, including the Wilderness through which General Arnold marched to attach Quebec'; 'Plan of the Investment and Attack of York in Virginia,' and others.
The overall condition is fine, with some minor edge chipping and expected foxing. Internally, the pages are generally sound and legible, some with writing on the title pages and pencil on a few internal pages. This rare, five-volume set is highly desirable, providing exceptional reading and reflecting significant historical value. (6 items)
