Autographs
The “American” Bonaparte

JOSEPH BONAPARTE, Napoleon’s brother and as such, the King of Naples and Spain. After Waterloo, he fled France for New Jersey.

Document Signed (“Buonaparte”), in French, 1 page, 7.25” x 8.5’, on the printed letterhead of Les Administrateurs De Directoire Du Department De Corse, Corsica, November 26, 1790; co-signed by seven other civic leaders, Bonaparte’s 3.25” signature is the boldest, Very Fine.
Lightly worn, with two very small tears at the bottom margin. This handsome and exceptionally early document concerns civic business with one Citizen Guillaux . Bonaparte, presumably, signed as a lawyer.
As Napoleon’s eldest brother, the capable and liberally-minded Bonaparte gained and lost two crowns, necessitating his flight from France in 1816 to, ultimately, New Jersey - where the neighbors called him “Mr. Bonaparte.” His seventeen year exile on the banks of the Delaware River was much assuaged by the five million dollars worth of jewels he brought with him.
