PAUL COLIN (1892-1986)
347. Lyvia Holos.
46 3/4 x 63 3/8 in./118.7 x 161 cm
Imp. de la CinÈmatographie Francaise, Paris
Cond A.
Paul Colin’s life was immersed in that of the French music hall, beginning with his appointment in 1925 as decorator of the ThÈ‚tre des Champs ElysÈes, where he would launch a prolific career as a posterist, designer, painter and illustrator. And though he would create publicity material for a number of stars who burned longer and brighter than Lyvia Holos, Colin’s expressive capacity provides no short shrift for the now-unknown dancer. Though no performance record for her could be unearthed, Colin’s rendering of Holos, with her upper limbs as long and limber as her lower, leads us to believe she certainly must have been known for her interpretive, potentially contortionistic, prowess.
