Katherine Dunham was a pioneer in the development of the Negro Art Dance and was herself an international dance star as well as a distinguished anthropologist, ethnologist, actress, director, teacher and author. As head of her own dance company, she gained international fame with a program rooted in black heritage. From 1945 to 1960 she toured all over the world with great success. For her Paris performances, she selected Colin to do the posters. He produced three, all brimming with vivacity and movement, of which this is by far the rarest. In fact, no documentation of it exists in any prior publication that we are aware of. For this appearance at the Palais de Chaillot, Colin pays as much attention to the ethnicity of the performer as to her movement and the results are stunning, fraught with a depth of personality not present in his other designs for Dunham.
