<b>Colonial America</b><hr><b>Choice Dated British Infantry Hanger</b>

<b>'1747' DATED, BRITISH INFANTRY HANGER, Choice Very Fine.</b>
30.5' tapered straight blade, marked '1747' on both sides, 6.5' brass grip, knucklebow and counterguard. Blade is a nice gray-and-brown patina with a few minor nicks. Brass grip is worn and battered, with a tear along the bottom of one side. Attractive olive and brown shiny finish to brass. Used mostly up until about the time of the French & Indian War, most of the swords carried by the British Army had hilts patterned after the civilian "smallsword." Contemporary illustrations, such as Hogarth's "March to Finchley" show sword hilts of this type, and many fragments of these hilts turn up in 18th century American military archaeological sites. This example is in wonderful condition, and stands out from other examples by having a dated blade - 1747- in addition to the crudely engraved "running wolf" of Solingen.
