American Revolution
Rare Revolutionary War Sword Carrier Belt Hook

c. 1775, Revolutionary War Sword Carrier Belt Hook, Choice Very Fine.
3.75” wide belt hook made of iron, from which two chains dangle, one 9” long, the other 14.” The top part hooked over a belt and the sword scabbard was attached to the two chains. The unequal lengths of the chains allowed the sword to hang in the proper position. This handy little belt hook was how many of the Revolutionary War soldiers carried their smallswords. The reason they are so scarce today was because of their utilitarian nature. Families kept the swords and scabbards, but discarded the belt hooks. The example offered here is made of iron and remains in excellent condition, with hardly any pitting of the surfaces on either the hook or the chains. Documented in Neumann’s “Swords and Blades of the American Revolution.” Rare!
