JULES CHERET (1836-1932)
334. MystËre. ca. 1891.
8 1/2 x 16 3/8 in./21.7 x 41.6 cm
Original hand-signed pastel drawing. Framed.
Emerging from a miasmic maelstrom of muted pastels, the frailty of this delicately balanced beauty from the far reaches of the artistic ether shows that ChÈret was capable of bringing forth the eerier face of his muse than was evidenced with the frivolous "pretty ladies” he so facilely trotted out in the name of mass marketing. Precisely what–if any–lithographic ends this fragile dancer was headed for remains as mysterious as the skullish clown accompanying her into our reality. One can’t help but notice, however, the similarities between this phantom ballerina and the more substantial central figure of the MusÈe Grevin poster (see No. 328).
