Colonial America
Sword Carried by French Grenadiers

c.1690-1730, French Infantry Hanger, Very Fine.
26.75' blade, 5.5' brass grip. Nice brown and gray shiny patina to the pitted blade, which is slightly bent near the flanged counterguard. Braided brass pommel and knucklebow with lovely olive patina, and a few nicks and a thin crack along the top of the pommel. This type of short sword, or hanger, was commonly carried by French Grenadiers, and other types of infantrymen, in the service of the French King Louis. Fragments of this very type of sword have been recovered during archaeological excavations at Fortress Louisbourg in Canada, famous for the siege Americans took part in in 1745 and 1758. Additionally, it appeared in the 1697 edition of St. Remy's Memoires d'Artillerie.
