Colonial America
18th Century French Instructive Cards
Biblical and Royal Figures

c. 1740, 36 Instructive Cards, in French.
4' x 2.5', Fine. 18 cards contain information on Biblical characters such as Saul, David, Samson, Esther, and Judas Mackabee; also, a card on the creation of the world. 15 cards contain information on kings and queens of England, such as Egbert, Ethelwolf, Canut, Ethrelred, Edward the Martyr, Mary and Anne. 3 cards deal with mythical figures: Mars, Tantalus and Aurore. Cards are heavily toned, but intact and legible. Labeled sequentially with Roman numerals, several cards are missing from this group, which appears to be composed of at least two sets.

The purpose of these cards is to make learning interesting for students. The cover card advises 'fathers of families and instructors' that before learning, students must have instilled in them the love of learning, must be made to feel the necessity of knowing, and to do this one must (as Montaigne says) 'descend to the childish level of his students.' A 300-year-old innovative teaching tool.
