JULES CHERET (1836-1932)
322. Le Figaro. 1895.
22 3/4 x 31 3/4 in./57.8 x 80.6 cm
Imp. Chaix, Paris
Cond B+/Restored tears at edges.
Ref: Broido, 570; Reims, 363; PAI-IX, 235
Attributed unquestionably to ChÈret by both Broido and the Reims catalogue of 1896–and certainly printed in ChÈret’s plant–certain characteristics set this Figaro poster apart from the body of ChÈret’s output. For one, ChÈret typically didn’t draw the eyes of his subjects with such detail and this busty scribe is presented in a more matter-of-fact manner than most "ChÈrettes.” The signature is also a bit more indistinct than we are accustomed to seeing. But, if Alexandre Henriot included it as a work of ChÈret in his famed 1896 Reims exhibition, that’s good enough for us.
