American Revolution
Surgeon on the Connecticut Revolutionary War Privateer “Guilford”

November 10, 1837, Serving the Heirs of a Surgeon on the Revolutionary War Privateer “Guilford,” Seek a Pension.
1 page plus integral address leaf, 9.5” x 7.5”, Very Fine. A handwritten letter from Robert Dillon to the Secretary of the State of Connecticut, requesting information on the Revolutionary War record of his father, William Fitch, who, we now know, served as a surgeon on the Privateer “Guilford” from April 25 to June 29, 1779. Accompanied by five display cards relating to Fitch and the “Guilford.” The “Guilford” was formerly the British ship “Mars” that was captured by the Americans on February 24, 1779 after having been driven ashore by the wind at Guilford (hence the new name). She was recaptured by the British shortly thereafter (July 11, 1779).
