Lot 315: c. 1775, Colonial Era Naval Button
Colonial America
Exceptional Colonial Naval Button

c. 1775, Colonial Era Naval Button, similar to RAU.NA.17D and Troiani BNC.1 and BNC.m (British Naval CaptainÕs buttons), Choice Extremely Fine.
A small Naval button, 15.5 mm, made of copper or brass, still with some of the original gilding still visible, especially in the recessed areas of the design and adding to the highlights eye appeal. Original shank still attached and in excellent condition. The overall the surfaces are lightly worn and still very attractive. We were unable to find this in AlbertÕs 'Record of American Uniform and Historical Buttons,' so it may be of foreign origin, but the fabric and character indicate a dating during the American Colonial era and similar to an example said to be on display in a prior exhibit at the Dewitt museum in Hartford, Connecticut.
