American Revolution
1757 Document with an Embossed Revenue Stamp, Very Fine overall, Embossed Seal in Extremely Fine condition
“Taxation without Representation” - Here is one of the examples of the hated stamp tax. The stamp, 3 pence pine tree type of Massachusetts (Scott RM3), appears at the lower left, boldly embossed. These “stamps” were required on Colonial documents, and became the basis for revolt. This one is on an order to the Sheriff of Essex County, Massachusetts in 1757 concerning the goods or estate of Thomas Goss, a fisherman. Dated January 22, 1757 and measuring approx. 6.75” x 8.5.”
