American Revolution
Fabulous “AMERICAN TAXATION” Broadside Poem

c. 1778, Revolutionary War Broadside Poem “AMERICAN TAXATION,” Very Fine.
9.5” x 7,” plain back, light to moderate aging, some areas of darker toning, but no holes, tears or impairments. “Sold, wholesale and retail, by L. Deming, No. 62, Hanover Street, 2nd door from Friend Street, Boston.” A wonderful, 36 stanza poem relative to the British taxation of the American colonies, a source of ire (“taxation without representation”) that eventually led to the Revolutionary War.

Here are some sample verses:
“While I relate my story, Americans give ear,
Of Britain’s fading glory you presently shall hear;
I’ll give a true relation, attend to what I say,
Concerning the taxation of North America...

We have a bold commander who fears not sword or gun,
A second Alexander, his name is WASHINGTON;
His men are all collected and ready for the ‘fray,
To fight they are directed for North America....”

An extremely historic and important document that helped foment and maintain anti-British sentiment. It’s also the first we’ve ever seen or handled (which says a lot, since we’ve been collecting and dealing in Revolutionary War broadsides for almost three decades)!
