A brooding Jean Valjean, the central figure of Victor Hugo’s classic, Les MisÈrables, shares his poster imprisonment with Fantine, the woman of the streets, whose daughter, Cosette, Valjean would later rescue from an abusive family. The canvas of Les MisÈrables is an enormous representation of innumerable episodes and characters–Valjean, for example, is seen here in the early stages of his harsh imprisonment for stealing a loaf of bread before his escape and rebirth as M. Madeleine, a successful industrialist and mayor of a northern French town. The unhappy and tragic Fantine was never as happy or well attired in the novel as she is here; she is, however, prototypically ChÈret. An early and extremely rare work of this artist!!
