Charles Edward Chambers was born in Iowa and studied at the Art Institute of Chicago and the Art Students League in New York. He was a prolific illustrator (Harper’s, Cosmopolitan, Women’s Home Companion, Ladies’ Home Journal, McCall’s), and a specialist in oil paintings used as a basis for advertising. Thus, he did a series of musicians’ portraits for Steinway which ran for nine years, and the series for Chesterfield which lasted five years. Here, we are privy to three examples of his work–in bus card form–during his Chesterfield years. In addition to always presenting the viewer with subjects that appear to be positively radiating from the healthful benefits of tar and nicotine, Chambers was sure to always include a snappy catch phrase to drive his point home, whether you were simply enjoying a Chesterfield of your own or doling them out as holiday gifts.
