Lot 305 - 1942-P Jefferson Nickel. Type 2 NGC MS67
1942-P Jefferson Nickel. Type 2. A rather largish mark on the jaw and another at Jefferson's temple suggests that NGC erred in its grade. Nevertheless, the luster swirls around the coin like greased lightning on this first of the wartime alloy issues which has a large "P" mintmark above the dome.

During 1942, nickel became a strategic metal, having many uses in munitions making (appropriately for a metal whose original name meant Devil's Copper). There was too much industrial demand for nickel for existing sources to supply both the War Department and the Mint Bureau. During high-level discussions aimed at discovering a possible substitute for the standard 25% nickel alloy, with this 35%, part manganese and copper composition the result.
