(WORLD WAR II), GENERAL JOSEPH W. STILWELL.
Pencil and Charcoal Illustration Signed 'Joseph W. Stilwell, Gen., U.S.A.' 18' x 14', Choice Extremely Fine. Signed and dated by the artist, 'D.A. Ahrens, 1944.' A war-date, waist-up portrait of the general in uniform, seated at his desk. Signed in black ink at the lower edge of the desk. Stilwell (1883-1946), known as 'Vinegar Joe,' spent 13 years in China in World War I. In February 1942, he returned there and became Chiang Kai-shekÕs chief of staff and commander of U.S. troops in the China-Myanmar-India area. After being defeated in Myanmar (formerly Burma) by the Japanese, Stilwell retreated to India and prepared a successful counterattack. Stilwell was recalled to the States in October 1944 because of tensions between him and Chiang Kai-shek. He served as chief of Army Ground Forces and commanded the U.S. 10th Army on Okinawa in the final months of the war.
