Autograph Letter Signed, ' John L. Worden,' May 15, 1863, Quaker Hill, NY, 8' x 5', Extremely Fine. To famous actor James H. Hackett, declining his house. In part: '...I thank you for your offer, but upon consideration & consultation with Mrs. Worden, have decided that your house is not exactly the thing we want, though it is a beautiful & very desirable spot...' Boldly written and signed in dark brown ink. Pencil erasure at bottom of page. On March 9, 1862, Worden was the skipper of the 'Monitor' when she met the Confederate ironclad 'Merrimack' at Hampton Roads, Virginia. The two ironclads fought to a draw.
