Due to the graphic similarities between this image and an Arjen Galema design for KLM airlines (see PAI-XXVI, 67), our first impression, before textual translation, was that we had obtained an Italian travel poster, fraught with epic romance and juxtaposition. We couldn’t have been more wrong. To our surprise, the product being sold in this poster is fascism. In truth, there is a commercial item being sold–Red Table Cream–but the real sales pitch is for a totalitarian philosophy. In fact, the table cream is mentioned in such an offhanded manner that it makes it difficult to differentiate whether it’s table polish or table sherry. The rest of the text reads as follows: “Raise the sails, youth of Italy in the wake of De Pineda (referring to the legendary Italian galleon shown on the poster).” The presence of the double entendre of the wake–both of the boat and the awakening of enlightenment–and the sweeping exhilaration of wine and nationalism make for an intriguing and enigmatic design, And just in case you were wondering how the the sea plane fit into all of this, the poster was sponsored by the National Air League.
