<b>JOHN E. WOOL, Union General Who Saved Fortress Monroe in 1861.</b>
Manuscript Letter Signed, 'John E. Wool/Major General/ U.S. Army,' March 13, 1869, Troy [NY], 8' x 5', Choice Very Fine. To E.D. Worcester, Treasurer of the N.Y. Central Rail Road, regarding a dividend which Wool has not called for because of ill health. A postscript is also in WoolÕs hand: 'I have given my official designation because there are two persons of the name of John E. Wool in this city.' Wool was a veteran of the War of 1812 and the Mexican War. Seventy-two years old when the Civil War began, he was promoted to Major General, U.S.A., making him the fourth ranking general in the Federal service, behind only McClellan, FrŽmont, and Halleck. He died the same year he wrote this letter.
