Rare, large-format poster for the October 17, 1931, return maiden voyage of the "Atlantique,” with credit being given to Cassandre and his agency in the top left corner. There is hardly any purer example of Cassandre’s finding formal beauty in the creations of the machine age than this. His game here is to render the ship as nearly to a perfect rectangle as possible, centered on the sheet–this simplicity is all the more striking because unlike the "Normandie” (see PAI-XXXI, 132), the ship is not seen head on, but at an angle. "Instead of a sleek oceangoing vessel,” as Brown & Reinhold note, "Cassandre’s rendition becomes a mammoth wall of steel that towers in fantastic and unreal fashion over a minuscule tugboat.” Yet there’s an almost humorous touch in the way the little tug is turned to "imitate” its huge companion’s exact angle, as though aspiring to be its equal. Extraordinarily rare variant!
