Smoke ‘em if you got ‘em. Clever, clever Cassandre. Initially, we have what appears to be a wonderfully executed object poster for Golden Club cigarettes, their tempting narcotic thrust inducing a “Don’t you wish you had one these?” mentality on the viewer’s addictive bent. But then as the eye moves downward from the thrilling nicotinic heights of its straight-cut perspective, you can clearly see that with the subtlest of golden strokes and speckles, Cassandre has done more than present the product thrice over–he’s converted it into a Golden Club itself, a towering monolith to the product it promotes. Rare!
