Partially-printed Document Signed by the president and secretary of 'the Union Mutual Marine Insurance Company, of New Bedford' on a $1,700 insurance policy covering 'catchings on board bark Draco,' March 17, 1853, 11' x 9', 1 page policy with integral sheet, completed in manuscript, Choice Extremely Fine. The premium for this policy was $56.25, which covered sperm oil--valued at $1.25 a gallon. 'James V. Cox' was the purchaser and beneficiary of this policy, #1207. Light blue paper in wonderful condition, with normal folds and some fading. Of historical note are the detailed conditions and instructions covering products of the whaling industry--much discussion about how the insurance company would cover oil catchings, blubber, oil in casks, etc.
