CARLO CASALTOLI
292. Novara/Esposizione Agraria. 1901.
27 x 76 5/8 in./68.6 x 194.6 cm
Armanino, Genova
Cond B/Slight tears at folds and edges.
Novara, the thriving commercial and industrial hub on the borders of Italy’s Piedmont and Lombardy regions, announces its autumnal agricultural conference and exposition with a splendid 2-sheet combination of expected heroic allegory and earthy literalism. One of the more peculiar aspects of the conference is a discussion of the safety and ecological impact of the grandinifugo, a large-mouthed firearm whose blast is used to disperse hailstorms, seen in the top panel in the company of craftsman and Art Nouveau inspiration. Also depicted in the poster is the Basilica of San Gaudenzio, built between 1577 and 1659 and crowned with an audaciously slender dome.
