<b>Autographs</b><hr><b>H.G. WellsÕ 'War of the Worlds' In 'PearsonÕs Magazine'</b>

<b>(H.G. WELLS), English Novelist, Sociologist, and Historian.</b>
'War of the Worlds' published in the British magazine, 'PearsonÕs Magazine,' in nine monthly installments, from April to December 1897. This beautifully illustrated series preceded the first edition of the book in 1898 and used a different illustrator than the book. 'PearsonÕs' was published in London by C. Arthur Pearson Ltd. It was customary that gentlemen of the time have the publisher bind up their issues at the end of each year. These are the original bindings used by 'PearsonÕs' for Vol. III and Vol. IV, which contain 'War of the Worlds,' three installments being in Vol. III and six in Vol. IV. The story begins on Page 363 of Vol. III (January to June 1897), and concludes on page 745 of Vol. IV (July to December 1897). Also present are stories by Arthur Conan Doyle and Rudyard KiplingÕs 'Captains Courageous,' as well as other fabulous and fascinating glimpses into the minds of the Victorian period. Some flaws on bindings and general overall wear; Vol. III has a pencil inscription on first endpaper. This set of two volumes sold for $3,450 in SothebyÕs 1999 sale of the Sam Moskowitz science fiction collection. A rare find.
