LEONETTO CAPPIELLO (1875-1942)
290. Buvez du Vin. 1933.

Cond A.
Ref: PAI-XXXII, 233
The French hardly need to be told to “drink wine and live happily,” but here the French wine industry reminds them anyhow. (Another version of the poster–see PAI-IX, 107–adds the notion of the happiness that comes from drinking wine with fish.) And, indeed, we see happiness–in human form–emerging from a France-shaped mass of grapes. With at least 100 posters for wines and spirits to his credit, Cappiello was the logical choice for this commission–and the right choice as his brilliant solution proves. This is the larger format.
