Lot 29 - 1856 Flying Eagle Cent PCGS AU55
1856 Flying Eagle Cent. Minor planchet flake in OF on the obverse. Gray to tannish brown surfaces exhibit a pleasing aspect and a smooth, matte-like appearance from the hard copper-nickel alloy from which these are struck.

Many hobbyists began collecting Flying Eagle and Indian cents at an early stage, and who among us has not thought of owning an 1856 flying eagle cent rarity? Current opinion suggests that between 1,500 and 2,500 1856 cents were made, some that year, and others over the course of the next several years. Initially produced to persuade congressmen of the need for, and practical size of, small cents to use instead of the old large coppers, they were later struck for collectors and others on a limited basis. Apart from of the actual number produced, this date has always been a cherished rarity in U.S. numismatics, almost since the date coin collecting began. Attractive About Uncirculated 1856 Flying Eagle cents don't come cheaply in today's numismatic marketplace, but on the other hand, they never have. We suspect that the present coin will see serious bidding pursuit, and the outcome will be that befitting a nice quality example of this famous issue. (#2013)
