PAPILLON (1973) - Henri "Papillon" Charriere's (Steve McQueen) Costume

Henri "Papillon" Charriere's (Steve McQueen) costume from Franklin J. Schaffner's Papillon. Papillon and his fellow prisoners in the French Guianan penal system wore increasingly distressed striped prison costumes as they faced further hardship.

Papillon was notably shot in remote locations throughout Spain and Jamaica, with the real Charriere acting as a consultant on location. McQueen received a Golden Globe nomination for Best Motion Picture Actor, Drama for his performance, which has since been recognized as one of his signature roles.

This costume consists of a red and cream-striped cotton collared henley featuring a Western Costume Co. tag numbered "2182-1" and labelled for "Steve McQueen, chest size "46," sleeve size "33," and collar size "17 1/2" sewn in near the hem, as well as a second Western Costume label sewn-in and "6" and "62" stamped on the interior collar. Also included are matching trousers with a Western Costume Co. tag labelled "Steve McQueen" and "Henry [sic]" hand-marked on the interior. The costume is intentionally distressed by production with staining, tearing, and fraying, and the hand-markings exhibit fading from age.
