By utilizing the rascally hero of a pair of Beaumarchais’ popular comedies as his centerpiece scribe–who, as luck would have it is also the namesake of this particular Parisian newspaper–Cappiello achieves distinct promotional goals quite facilely. As anyone familiar with the Marriage of Figaro would know, the play–not the depoliticized Mozart opera of the same name–served as not only a humorous romp, but also a mouthpiece for the playwright’s bitter criticism of the ruling class. Therefore, the artist makes it clear that not only is the paper an excellent diversion, but also an indispensable source for informative opinion, a supposition he brings to the fore along politically incorrect gender lines. It’s somewhat surprising that no realized poster can be uncovered of this design on two very specific counts–first, it’s a splendid piece of artwork; secondly, this maquette is of such a large size and in such a complete state that one imagines that Cappiello certainly must have felt it was headed for the presses. Indeed a mystery, but a spectacular one to be sure.
