Colonial America
Early Printing of The Articles of Confederation

c. 1777 Imprint, “The Articles of Confederation...,” Very Fine or better.
11.5” x 7.5,” 6 pages, disbound, moderate age toning, minimal foxing, and one stain that affect the last several pages, but all of the text is legible and clear. Signed at the end in type by Henry Laurens as President of the U.S. Congress. An extremely rare, early printing of the first attempt to bring the states together in a united front.

The Articles of Confederation were completed on November 15, 1777 and sent for ratification to the 13 participating colonies (New Hampshire, Massachusetts-Bay, Rhode-Island (and Providence Plantations), Connecticut, New-York, New-Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, North-Carolina, South-Carolina and Georgia). The Articles granted sovereignty to each of the states, but was criticized roundly for placing too much power in the hands of the Federal government. The failure of the Articles led to the development of the U.S. Constitution ten years later, which created a more “perfect union.”
