Autographs
1652 'Henry Vane' Document Signed

SIR HENRY VANE, British Statesman and Governor of Massachusetts.
Manuscript Document Signed, 'H. Vane,' along with four other men, on fine, laid, watermarked paper, (London, England?), September 21, 1652, 12' x 7.5', Very Fine. An order sent to Thomas Fauconbridge, Receiver General of the Public Revenue, ordering him to make payment for support of a minister. In nice condition for its age, with reasonably bright paper. Vane signs on the left side just below the center. All edges are lightly chipped and frayed, but overall, this is a rather pleasing document.

Vane was the governor of Massachusetts from 1636-37, but lost popularity when he sided with Anne Hutchinson in theological disputes; he was defeated for reelection and returned to England, where he served under Charles I and Cromwell. Like many politicos throughout history, he fell victim to changing administrations. He was arrested after the Restoration (1660), convicted of treason, and executed for being 'too dangerous to live.'
