DAVID E. TWIGGS, Confederate Major General.
Autograph Letter Signed, 'D.E. Twiggs' as Brigadier General of the U.S. Army on ruled paper, October 23, 1860, East Pascagoula, (MS), 9.75' x 7.75,' Very Fine. Bright and clean, with some pencil notations at bottom left. A handwritten letter to Colonel Sam Cooper. In full: 'I have not yet heard from the Secretary [of War, John B. Floyd] about my return to Texas. I have much to do if I go back and would be pleased to hear what the secretaryÕs decision is...' Twiggs was transferred back to Texas where he did have a lot to do... four months after this letter was written, he surrendered his command to the Confederates and turned his Federal forces over to Ben McCulloch. He wasnÕt alone, however, both Cooper and Floyd did the same thing!
