Colonial America
A Tax to “Enlarge the Powers” of Yale

November 11, 1795 Document, A Receipt for Payment of Taxes to Improve Yale College, Choice Extremely Fine.
Document Signed, “John Porter,” partially-printed and accomplished in manuscript, 1 page, 6” x 7 1/2,” Commissioner’s Office (Connecticut), November 11, 1795. Being receipt No. 61, recording that E. Williams has paid “Fifty Pounds Lawful Money, for which Sum the Commissioners appointed by the General Assembly in May 1793, are accountable agreeable to the Directions contained in an Act entitled an Act for enlarging the Powers and increasing the Funds of Yale-College.” Yale, like Rome, wasn’t built in a day - or without taxes. Prize money from captured ships, lotteries and, as evidenced here, grants from the Connecticut Assembly have all gone into making the college preeminent for over three hundred years.
