LEONETTO CAPPIELLO (1875-1942)
274. Course de Velo. 1898.
12 3/4 x 12 7/8 in./32.3 x 32.8 cm
Original gouache and pencil drawing. Framed.
This picture of cycling fortitude represents one of the very first drawings submitted by Cappiello to Le Rire upon his arrival in Paris from his native Livorno. The expressive caricatures he submitted to the humor magazine were promptly accepted, and thus a legendary career was launched. These drawings were so well received by the public that he became, virtually overnight, a favored of the Paris theater. As one expects from Cappiello, there’s nothing in this work that anyone–even the cyclist one suspects–could deem offensive, only the slightest exaggeration of the racer’s competitive focus. And as a discovery of an early Michelangelo study would incite a collecting riot in the fine arts crowd, this pre-poster Cappiello should definitely produce similar results in the lithographic illuminati.
