Autographs
Naval Hero Thomas Truxtun Mentions Declaration of Independence Signer Robert Morris

THOMAS TRUXTUN, American Revolutionary Naval Hero, One of the First Six Captains in the United States Navy.
Autograph Letter Signed, 'Thomas Truxtun,' December 5, 1789, Philadelphia, 8.75' x 7.25', Choice Very Fine. Truxtun writes to his partner, William Constable, discussing the lucrative China trade and Robert Morris. In full: 'Mr. Robert Morris having wrote the Joint Instructions for Mr. John H. Huston and Captain Robert Mercer, which was thought well, as Mr. Naeglehurst and self, were on the spot to confer with him, on all the different points relating to the expedition, a considerable time will be saved to you, as you will no doubt be much employed in other respects, dispatching the New York. The Toute (?) I sent you for Lindsay, with what I sent you to be added for Mercer, is all that I conceive necessary to hand the Captain of the New York as from me. I think you will find that Mr. Morris has touched so very fully on every particular, that we may deem his Instructions all sufficient. Very shortly after you receive this, I hope it will be in your power to forward the N[ew] Y[ork]s cost and outfits, also the Invoice of her cargo. I shall then as shortly, write you my farewell letter, untill then believe me to be your friend &c. Thomas Truxtun.' Minor paper loss at left margin, affecting two letters of text, and remnants of mounting strip down one edge of verso. Excellent content from an early naval hero.
