Autographs
Rare 'Jon;th Trumble' Signed French and Indian War Military Enlistment

JONATHAN TRUMBULL, Colonial Governor of Connecticut Who Supported the American Cause During the Revolution; Friend and Advisor to George Washington.
Partly-printed Document Signed 'Jon;th Trumble' as Assistant of the Connecticut Assembly, May 10, 1758, Hebron, Connecticut, 3.75' x 7.75', Fine. Ezekiel Kellogg of Hebron, Hartford County, voluntarily enlists 'as a Soldier, to serve his Majesty King GEORGE the Second, in a Regiment of Foot raised by the Colony of CONNECTICUT, to be commanded by Col. Nathan Whiting for invading Canada, and carrying WAR into the Heart of the EnemyÕs Possession....' Two inserted handwritten lines acknowledge receipt 'of Capt. Henry Champion two pounds which I promise to deliver to Ezekiel Kellogg toward his Bounty' and is signed by Gideon Whitney. The text then continues, certifying that Kellogg appeared before Trumble, 'one of his MajestyÕs Assistants for sd Colony and acknowledged, to have voluntarily inlisted to serve His Majesty.... He also acknowledged, he had heard the Second and Sixth Sections of the Articles of War, against Mutiny and Desertion, read unto him, and taken the Oath of Fidelity mentioned in the Articles.' Some toning and scattered staining; the document is mounted to another piece of paper of the same size. Trumbull signs very boldly with the original family name of 'Trumble'; it would be changed to 'Trumbull' in 1766. The date, place, and several other words are also in TrumbullÕs hand. The first such document we have seen. Rare.
