GASPAR CAMPS (1874-1931)
268. Silk Champenois Decorative Panel. ca. 1904.
14 x 28 1/4 in./35.5 x 71.7 cm
F. Champenois, Paris
Cond B+/Usual fraying and staining at edges.
Ref: PAI-XIX, 243
Printed on silk.
A dark-haired beauty in a peacock-feathered boa and a long, exquisitely-fringed green gown cradles a bird in a nest. Birds also adorn the borders. A superb Art Nouveau design, executed with meticulous workmanship and printed on silk. Camps, a Spaniard who spent most of his career in France, was one of a number of artists hired by the Champenois printing house to fill the void when Mucha left for America in 1904. Creating both advertising and decorative works, Camps eventually found his own groove–less graphic than Mucha and more akin to oil painting, marked by soft edges and shadings, as well as loads of kitschy sentimentality.
