Engraving after a painting by John Trumbull: 'THE SORTIE MADE BY THE GARRISON OF GIBRALTAR IN THE MORNING OF THE 27 OF NOVEMBER 1781,' January 1, 1799, engraved by William Sharp, Published by John Trumbull, Antonia de Poggi and William Sharp, London, England, 23.75' x 31.5' image, framed under plastic for shipping--in original period frame--to 28.5' x 38.5,' Fine. Large, uncolored print with age-toning and minor foxing. Very crisp, dramatic image. 2. Document Signed, 'Jno. Trumbull,' partly printed, undated receipt for a one-half subscription for a print of 'THE SORTIE OF GIBRALTAR, which we promise to deliver according to the Proposals,' 3.25' x 7.8,' Choice Near Mint. Lovely signature is 2.5' long, in brown ink. Being an actual receipt that would have been sent along with a copy of the original print! Trumbull (1756-1843) dedicated his career to the creation of a visual record of the Revolutionary War. He had served in the Continental Army from 1775-1777, went to London to study painting in 1780, and was briefly imprisoned. The painting and engraving of the 'Sortie' was considered his masterpiece!
