Menton is at the eastern end of the French Riveria, right on the Italian border (to step back to this vantage point, Broders might have had to show his passport). It had been best known as the “citrus city,” before a British physician in the late 19th century discovered it had the mildest climate on the French Riveria and sent home raving reviews of its lovely, unspoiled setting. Word spread, convalescents came from all over Europe and the citrus city boomed as a health resort. We view its pastel buildings across the bluest of water, through some vivid-orange trunked pines.
