ROGER BRODERS (1883-1953)
264. Marseille/Exposition Nationale Coloniale. 1922.

Imp. Cornille & Serre, Paris

Ref: Broders, p. 80; PAI-XXVIII, 161
The majority of Broders’ designs were created for the Paris-Lyon-MediterranÈe rail line, and here we are greeted with one of the several visions he created of Marseille: the busy harbor, its water reflecting a startling yellow sky, with ships and longshoremen in the foreground, the colorful town behind and the church of Notre Dame de la Garde in the distance. The arched frame gives us a window-seat and the colors act as spotlights in this promotion for the 1922 National Colonial Exposition. There also exists a later version of this image, with the bottom text line touting Marseille as “The Great Industrial and Commercial Metropolis” (see PAI-XIX, 196).
