Colonial America
1791 book on “...Practical Seamanship...”

1791, “...Practical Seamanship...” by William Hutchinson, Fine.
10.25” x 8.5”, 290 pages plus all twelve of the original plates. Published in 1791 by Thomas Billinge of Castle-Street in Liverpool, England. Hutchinson was a Mariner of long experience and the Dock Master at Liverpool; here he shares his wealth of knowledge. In this book can be found everything the sailor and officer of the late 1700s would need to know to handle a large, ocean-going vessel. The plates in the back of the book are wonderful and appropriate for framing all by themselves - the 12th is a large, fold-out plate. Although the original covers are worn and have separated from the spine, the “innards” are in great shape, with only light scattered age toning and minor paper loss on the bottom edge of the frontispiece. A neat crossover item for the antiquarian book and nautical collectors.
