Autographs
(ZACHARY TAYLOR).
1848 Letter About Presidential Campaign. Folded letter with blue 'Mohawk N.Y.' postmark and manuscript '5', datelined 'Warren, 22d Octr. 1848,' 2 pages plus integral address leaf, 10' x 8', Choice Very Fine. Written about two weeks before the Presidential election, the writer urges his children to vote for Zachary Taylor. In part: 'The Presidential Election is near at hand, should be much gratified to hear that you have given your vote & influence for General Taylor. If you have been sufficiently acquainted with the Character and motives of the three candidates for the Presidency, I canÕt see how you can consistently give your vote to Cass or Van Buren. Cass we know has pledged himself to go for the South and Slavery or its extension, & to veto every measure tht is not particularly benificial to Southern interest, that is to indorse all the measures of James K. Polk. And any person who has a tolerably good memory must recollect what the measures of Martin Van Buren were at the time he was Vice President and President, that they were wholly for the South, and in his letter to the Utica convention, declares his views are not changed. But General Taylor I believe to be a very honest man & if elected, President of the whole people & not for a party.'
