Precisely where does one choose to begin to gush over the sensational attributes to the teeming street scene of "Sleighing in New York”? Should the rowdiness of the various snowball fights be singled out first? Or the array of sleighs jockeying for position on the metropolitan thoroughfares? Maybe "Barnum’s Museum”–better known as the American Museum–and its hinted-at exotica? The sheer mass of bustling humanity is simply a head-spinning window into Manhattan’s pre-motorized age. Harry T. Peters in his monumental work, "America on Stone,” indicates this print’s value and rarity: "’Sleighing in New York’ . . . is the only work from the hands of [Nagel & Lewis] that I have seen. It is justly celebrated, and well worthy of reproduction” (p. 93).
