Autograph Letter Signed ('N.P. Banks'), as Speaker of the House, 1 page, 4.5' x 7', Waltham, November 15, 1856. To writer F.H. Underwood. Choice Very Fine; some spilled ink in lower right corner. Accompanied by an engraving of Banks in uniform, 7.5 x 10'. Congressional niceties being what they are - or certainly in the 19th century, were - here Banks, as the Speaker of the House, attempts to recommend the wife of a Congressman from another party and another state, to the Massachusetts publishing firm of Phillips and Sampson. In part: 'Mrs. Juliette H.S. Campbell [wife of James Hepburn Campbell] who will present you this note desires an introduction to Messrs. Phillips and Sampson. She is the lady of a member of the House of Representatives from Pennsylvania , and any subject she presents to you, or to Messrs. Phillips and Sampson...[she is] of accomplished mind and excellent character. I beg you will favor me by assisting her in her plans by any suggestions you think serviceable...'
