Lot 249: 1755 Akmanack by N. Ames
Colonial America
AN ASTRONOMICAL DIARY, OR AN ALMANACK, 1755, by Nathaniel Ames, Boston, MA, Fine.

15 pages, 6.25” x 4,” some tears, age toned. Printed in Boston by J. Draper, for the Booksellers. Foxing throughout, with a stain on the front and back pages, from tape once used to hold the covers together. Once stitch bound, but now held together by a pin, though the first and last pages are loose. Small hole in the back page where the paper separated from the pin, though the small piece of separated paper remains attached to the pin. The print is striking and legible. Includes astronomical charts for January through December, 1755, but appears to be missing the last pages of the almanac. Also contains essays on “Diet” and “Exercise,” in which Ames conveys an early understanding of the importance of both. As Ames states, “The Law of Nature so ordains, ‘Toil, and be strong.” Evans 7143.
